Tigers win 3rd straight

AUBURN | Auburn will enter Friday’s three-game series at No. 16 Ole Miss on a three-game winning streak.

The Tigers beat Alabama State 11-2 at Plainsman Park Tuesday night to improve to 18-19 overall while Alabama State falls to 23-14. Auburn hasn’t committed an error in three-straight games.

“We had some good at-bats and got us started off the right way,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “We;re just going to keep riding the wave. The guys, as soon as they made the adjustments, we’ve been playing good baseball.”

Auburn got off to a fast start with four runs in the first inning and then plated at least one run in each of the next four innings.

Anfernee Grier led off the first with a solo home run over the Green Monster in left, his eighth of the season, Blake Logan hit a RBI double, Jackson Burgreen a sacrifice fly and Damon Haecker a RBI double.

Jordan Ebert hit a solo home run in the second, Cody Nulph drove in two with a two-out single in the third, Melvin Gray scored on a throwing error by ASU catcher Hunter Allen after he stole third base in the fourth, and Nulph and Grier had back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth.

Pinch-hitter J.J. Shaffer drove in a run in the eighth on a double to left-center.

Nulph was 3 of 4 with three RBI. Grier, Gray and Haecker had two hits apiece. Grier drove in two. Haecker extended his on-base streak to 12 straight with two hits, one walk and reached base on a throwing error.

Seven Auburn pitchers combined to hold ASU to five hits. Designated starter Izaac Yarbrough (3-1) earned the win allowing two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings. Gabe Klobosits struck out five and didn’t allow a hit in 2.0 innings out of the bullpen.

Friday’s series opener at Ole Miss is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on SECN+ and WatchESPN.
