AUBURN | Justin Camp gave Auburn exactly what it needed.

The senior shutout Southern on two hits with a career-high nine strikeouts to lead the Tigers to a 7-0 win Saturday afternoon at Plainsman Park.

“A fifth-year senior with a lot of maturity went out there and handled the ball really good today,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “Instead of fastball, fastball, he’s added a little bit of a sinker to the repertoire that got a ton of ground balls.”

Camp (1-0) retired 16 straight batters from the second through the seventh innings. He threw 99 pitches in a career-high 8.0 innings.

“It felt good to just fill up the zone with all my pitches today, just let my defense work, get a ton of ground balls and move the game on quick,” Camp said. “After a four-hour game last night, having one of those quick games helps the team.”

Gordon Cardenas closed out the game retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth.

Auburn improves to 4-2 on the season while Southern falls to 0-5.

The Tigers had 12 hits, five stolen bases and scored in each of the first six innings. Jordan Ebert drove home a run in the first on a single to center and another in the third on a sacrifice fly to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Daniel Robert hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot, over the centerfield wall in the fourth.

Joshua Palacios had three hits and scored two runs. Anfernee Grier and Robert had two hits apiece. Melvin Gray was 1-of-2 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

“It was just a clean game, a good baseball game,” Thompson said. “For the most part our guys played offense to manufacture runs. You got the stolen base to move into scoring position, one dirt ball got a guy to third, which allowed him to score and we had some unselfish at-bats.”

Junior Gabe Klobosits (0-0, 12.00 ERA) will start for Auburn as it goes for the sweep of the three-game series Sunday at 12:30 p.m. CT. The game will be carried on the WatchESPN app.
