AUBURN | T.J. Neal will finish his college career in the SEC.

The former Illinois linebacker will transfer to Auburn for his fifth and final year, Neal announced Tuesday.

“I loved everything at Auburn," Neal said. "I just went with my instincts and committed."

Neal made the decision after spending one night in Auburn. The Illini’s two-year starter arrived on the Tigers' campus Monday for an official visit.

“The visit was great," Neal said. "I really like it at Auburn and really like the coaches."

That includes first-year linebackers coach Travis Williams.

"He's a real down-to-earth guy," Neal said. "I really like him a lot. He's very eager to get me down to Auburn."

Neal, who was listed on Illinois’ 2015 roster as 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, will provide immediate help for Auburn. The Tigers lost four linebackers to graduation.

“They want me to play the 'Mike' linebacker position,” Neal said. "That fits me perfectly."

Neal had 109 tackles, including 43 solos, 14 tackles-for-loss and two sacks in 2015. He had 98 tackles as a sophomore in 2014.

Neal is scheduled to graduate from Illinois on May 14 and return to Auburn soon after.

"I'll be back in Auburn before May 18," Neal said. "I can't wait. I'm looking forward to helping Auburn have a big season."
