Coach Contracts

GUS MALZAHN, HEAD COACH

$4,725,000 per year through 12/31/20. He is paid $500,000 as a salary, $2,112,500 for personal endorsement rights and $2,112,500 million for media appearances and personal appearances. (The two big portions of Malzahn's compensation are paid by Tigers Unlimited.)

He signed an amendment to his latest (signed in 2014) contract during the spring of 2016 which yielded an extra year on the deal and a raise of $875,000 per year.

His bonus schedule is as follows:

• 10 wins: $75,000

• 11 wins: another $25,000

• 12 wins: another $25,000

• 13 wins: another $25,000

• 14 wins: another $50,000

• Playing in the SEC championship game: $100,000

• Winning the SEC championship game: $150,000

• Earning an at-large "New Year's Six" bowl bid: $200,000

• Earning a bid to any other bowl: $50,000

• Losing the national title game: $300,000

• Winning the national title game: $500,000

• Final ranking in top 5 of AP or Coaches polls: $100,000

• Earning SEC Coach of the Year honors from AP or Coaches survey: $100,000

• Earning National Coach of the Year honors from the AFCA, AP, Home Depot, Walter Camp Foundation or by winning the Bryant Award: $100,000

His buyout protection is $2,237,000 for each year remaining on the contract, payable monthly through the conclusion of the contract.

His buyout fee requires Malzahn to personally back any contracts involving his assistant coaches who either: a.) do not follow him to his next stop or b.) aren't retained by Auburn in some capacity.

Auburn loaned Malzahn $700,000 to satisfy contractual obligations to Arkansas State. Auburn agrees to forgive $140,000 of that debt per year, though Malzahn will owe the balance if he doesn't complete the contract.
