Auburn lost 3-1 to Southern Miss Sunday to finish winless at the Cox Diamond Invitational in Pensacola, Fla.

Auburn’s bats went cold in sunny Florida this weekend.

The Tigers lost to Southern Miss 3-1 Sunday, dropping all three games of the Cox Diamond Invitational in Pensacola, Fla. Auburn lost 4-3 to Troy in 11 innings Friday and 1-0 to Michigan State Saturday.

Auburn batted just .189 during its first road trip of the season.

“We weren’t able to run, weren’t able to get enough guys on base,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “At the end of the day when we look back at the three-game series we wound up leaving a lot of guys on base.”

The loss drops Auburn to 6-6 while Southern Miss improves to 10-2

Auburn starter Cole Lipscomb (1-1) pitched well allowing two runs on just two hits with eight strikeouts. Lipscomb walked five, however, and two of those runners came in to score, one on a double-play groundout in the fourth inning and another on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

“I’m tickled to death with Cole. I thought all three starters gave us a chance to win a series and that’s the bottom line,” Thompson said.

USM added a run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk by AU reliever Marc Frazier.

Auburn scored its lone run on an RBI single by Jordan Ebert in the third. Ebert finished 3-of-4.

Auburn returns home Tuesday to face Georgia Tech at Plainsman Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.
