AUBURN | It was a career day for Andrew Mitchell.

The junior college transfer allowed one hit and struck out eight in 6.0 innings to lead Auburn to a 5-0 win over Alabama A&M Wednesday at Plainsman Park.

“I think Andrew Mitchell is incrementally growing,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “He gave us five shutout innings last week and gets through six innings today.”

Mitchell (2-0) lowered his ERA to 1.50 making his second start and third appearance for the Tigers since transferring from Delgado College in New Orleans, La.

“It started with fastball location and getting the ball in play to my defense because I know they’re going to make the plays behind me,” Mitchell said.

“Anytime you can throw zeros up on the board definitely helps your confidence. Just seeing everyone progressing and making more pitches is exciting to see.”

Marc Frazier threw a scoreless seventh, Izaac Yarbrough a hitless eighth and Gabe Klobosits a hitless ninth as four Auburn pitchers combined for a two-hitter.

After going hitless through the first three innings, Auburn’s batters broke through in the fourth as Niko Buentello lined an RBI single to right field.

The Tigers added three more runs in the fifth on an RBI triple by Anfernee Grier, an error by Bulldogs second baseman Brandon Whitaker and an RBI double by Jordan Ebert. The Tigers added a run in the sixth when Grier was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Auburn had just four hits but drew eight walks, four hit by pitches and had six stolen bases. Grier scored two runs, had two RBI and two stolen bases. He has nine stolen bases this season, which matches total from last season.

“We did enough,” Thompson said. “We just didn’t string it or have multiple hits by anybody.”

Bulldog starter Parker Hill (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits in 5.0 innings.

Auburn improves to 6-3 while Alabama A&M falls to 2-8.

Auburn returns to action this weekend at the Cox Diamond Invitational in Pensacola, Fla. The Tigers will play Troy Friday at 6 p.m. CT, Michigan State Saturday at 11 a.m. and Southern Miss Sunday at 3 p.m.
