Auburn shutout by Houck
Tanner Houck threw a complete-game shutout and Auburn allowed two unearned runs in a 2-0 loss at Missouri.
Auburn was short two starters and a lot of hits.
Tanner Houck struck out 10 in a complete-game shutout as Missouri evened the series with a 2-0 win over Auburn Friday night.
With injured starters Joshua Palacios (wrist) and Daniel Robert (hand) out of the lineup, Auburn managed just four hits off Houck, who is projected as a high first-round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft.
Justin Camp (2-2) took the loss despite a strong start. The senior didn’t allow an earned run in 7.0 innings. He gave up four hits, walked three and struck out three.
“Houck did a great job but I was equally as proud and impressed with Justin,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “I thought he gave us a chance all night. He settled in and starting pitching with all three pitches. He stayed down in the strike zone. We kept battling. I think we left four on base so the guy pitched a really good game.”
Both of Missouri’s runs were unearned coming on a throwing error by second baseman Melvin Gray in the first inning and a passed ball by catcher Blake Logan in the eighth.
Niko Buentello was 2 of 4 to lead Auburn at the plate.
Auburn, which beat Missouri 11-9 Thursday, falls to 15-16 overall and 3-8 in the SEC.
The series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m. CT on SECN+ and WatchESPN. Auburn sophomore left-hander Andrew Mitchell (4-1, 4.57 ERA) will face Missouri freshman left-hander Michael Plassmeyer (2-2, 5.13).
