Auburn loses lead in ninth and loses game in 11th as Alabama takes game two 4-3.

It’s the little things that make a difference in close games and that’s why Auburn fell to 1-10 in one-run games Saturday night.

An error on a potential double play ground ball allowed a runner to score from second with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning as Alabama rallied to beat the Tigers 4-3 at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

Auburn falls to 20-26 overall and 7-16 in the SEC while the Tide improves to 27-20 and 12-11.

“We just continue to have to get better in a couple of different areas, one or two pitches there to give ourselves a chance,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “One of these times somebody beats us to the pull side late in the game, we’re going to learn how to get beat the other way and every time there one or two more plays to extend the ballgame we’re going to keep growing. I’m going to keep the throttle down on doing that.

"When we grow in a couple of areas and shore a couple of these things up, a lot of these hard-fought, tough losses are going to go our way.”

Auburn led 3-2 going into the ninth before Will Haynie hit Casey Mize’s first pitch in the bottom of the inning deep over the left field wall to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

It stayed that way until the 11th when Alabama’s leadoff hitter reached base on an infield single that could have been an error on second baseman Melvin Gray. The runner moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then came around to score on Gray’s game-ending error.

Auburn committed two errors on the night to bring its season-total to 75.

Mize (2-3) took the loss allowing an unearned run in 4.1 innings. He pitched out of several big jams including in the 10th inning when the Tide got runners on second and third with no outs but failed to score.

Auburn went scoreless the final five innings.

The Tigers scored two runs in the third on RBI grounders by Cody Nulph and Jordan Ebert, and one in the sixth on an RBI single by Jackson Burgreen.

Justin Camp started and held Alabama to two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings with three strikeouts and three walks.

The series continues Sunday at 3 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.
